Winter Caretaker Report ’22/23: Vol. 1
Winter temperatures came early to Gangler’s this year. The ice was over a foot thick by mid-November and the flocks of Ptarmigan arrived at the end of October.
Close encounters with wolves have become a common occurrence. They’ve never shown any aggression and are very curious animals. The caribou herds usually migrate through our area later in the winter and the young wolves will get a chance at learning to hunt.
Another animal that I see on a daily basis is the Pine Marten. They are fast creatures and can chase down a squirrel through the trees no problem.
One of the most awe inspiring things I experience up here is the Aurora Borealis. When the Northern Lights are bright it’s otherworldly. There is no light pollution up here so I can see every star in the sky. Last night I saw the biggest meteor I’ve ever seen. It lit up the whole area.
