Winter Caretaker Report’22/23: Vol. 2

Winter is in full swing up here at Gangler’s North Seal River Lodge. The ice is almost 4 feet thick in some places, but that hasn’t stopped me from doing some fishing. I have caught dozens of Northern Pike with the biggest being a 42 inch master angler.

The caribou have officially arrived and the wolf packs are hot on their heels. Every morning the ground is littered with wolf tracks. Some even walking right by my front door.

The northern lights (Aurora Borealis) have been spectacular like usual. When I’m out in the dark taking pictures I can hear the wolves howling to me from the forest. Sometimes I go out and howl to the wolves to hear them respond. Especially during a full moon.

The temperatures have been fluctuating quite a bit this winter. For a few weeks it was close to 50 below zero. This week has been very warm with temperatures hovering around -15C. I’ve been seeing lots of tracks from an Arctic Fox recently as well.
