Winter Caretaker’s Report Volume 3
Greetings from the winter wonderland at Ganglers !
We have reached December with two months under our winter toques and life has been pretty good here in the far north.
November brought a wide range of temperatures here with highs back to zero and lows down to -30. With that also brought the snow and snow it did! Watching the weather to come we opted mid month to clear the 6 inches of snow from the roof of our caretakers cabin just in time for a system to come through dropping two feet of snow in a week. We were glad we had our fuels and water filled as we navigated through the deep powder , making trails and taking in the views …stunning ! Our research into the area was true, the cloud cover really is 90%, seeing a total of 7 hours of sunshine for the entire month. Happy to report cloudy days are never gloomy here as the skies are never dull and grey, but bright with color shining through.
With six more months to go we also used the time for more prep for winter supplies . With an abundance of eggs and expiry dates looming I have a good stash of cookie dough now ready in the freezer for quick warm baked treats throughout the season, and simple cakes already baked and ready for snacking. After some Google research I decided to try freezing the eggs for winter breaky…a few ice cube trays for the initial freezing has provided individual portions of dozens of eggs . Our first omlette this week…delish! While the thawed eggs do have an odd appearance at first, they are light and fluffy after they hit the heat and the pan!
