Winter Caretaker’s Report 24/25 Volume 1

Friday Oct. 11-

Greetings from the North Seal Manitoba !

Annette and Dennis here , looking forward to the what is to come at Ganglers !   Tomorrow marks 14 days since we landed, along with our two dashounds, Dash and DashLee, it was an exciting flight for all !

Ken was kind enough to fly us up here a week before our caretaker work began to give us a chance to get settled, unpack, and familiarize ourselves with the place.

As first-timers to Gangler’s, it didn’t take long to see what a great place it is! We had the opportunity to see the lodge in action, with guests hunting, fishing and hiking, the team here making sure everyone was happy and enjoying their experience. A great team that despite some weather hiccups and end of season closeup, their enthusiasm for the guests and positive attitudes together was great to see.

By day four, we saw our first snow, day five the frozen pipes. Transplanted from Ontario, we spent many years on the south Shores of Lake Nipissing, snow ice and frozen pipes were the norm there too. I have brought my woolies for this trip knowing the Temps may dip lower here.   When we saw the opportunity to be winter caretakers for Ken this season, we knew it was right up our alley, and an adventure we wanted to go on.

October – May on the 58th parallel alone with each other, the dashounds and the beauty of Ganglers North Seal River Lodge

Ken and the last of the Gangler’s team flew out last Sunday, generators shut down and the silence began, which was short. The giant crows were flying quickly “the humans are gone the humans are gone!”

We have been spoiled with nice weather so far, enjoying the sunshine when we can, and making sure our tanks are full, cans and food storage ready, and exploring a little too.

Wednesday wildlife became the theme of our day as two wolves began their journey into camp early in the morning. Keeping their distance from our cabin while we worked outside, they wandered through the guides’ camp looming for scraps left behind and seem to disappear around lunch time again.

Free-range running time is over for the dashounds until further notice! Tied-up but always with her watchful eyes open, DashLee is keeping alert.

That’s all for now, looking forward to sharing life at Gangler’s this season!
