Unbelievable Laker Mania!
Northern pike may be the most popular gamefish at Gangler’s but once someone gets into a large North Seal lake trout, they will never take ‘Salvelinus namaycush’ lightly again. The North Seal lake trout fishery is special and for those guests who sample it, a great angling experience. Guest Steve Movius is a perfect example of this. He is a Gangler’s regular who has now been bringing different members of his family to North Seal River Lodge for several years. A great group of people whom really enjoy the lodge and fishery. They love pike too but have really been getting into some big lakers the last few years and every year land some real hawgs. Steve sent us this note and photos sharing some of their latest adventures. Steve’s brother David discovered his belly had bruised after 3 consecutive days of landing 40″+ lakers (We will share in future eNews maillings). The North Seal watershed is truly Canada’s finest for the Canadian Grand Slam.
Thanks again for another amazing year at Gangler’s. The Lake trout fishing the last two years has been ridiculous. We had several great days of lake trout fishing. At one lake, we caught well over 200 lake trout in three days including 30 trophies. And that was with only two of us on the lake. I lost count of how many lake trout and trophies we caught in total. I had to talk my daughter Rachel into coming on the trip as she hadn’t really fished much in the past. She stated it was easily her best week of the year. She caught nine trophy lake trout in a single day. My older brother David is spoiled for life as he caught a 41, 42 and 44 inch Laker all in the same week. I had to settle for a mere 41 incher. 2019 was our sixth consecutive year at Gangler’s. I look forward to seeing you in 2020, maybe twice!
Fishing for North Seal Lakers.
The North Seal watershed is a very unique fishery for lake trout with a real advantage over many other Canadian lakes. Many of our lakes do not have the ‘uber deep’ water that many Canadian trout lakes have. North Seal trout ‘holes’ run 45-90′ of water , in very defined holes, unlike other Canadian fisheries where the trout water can be 120-180′ and spanning over a few miles. We believe the combination of the large flow of water from the many rivers draining in, lots of cold water springs, and the taint of tanic in the water which cuts the sun’s reach add up to create a unique lake trout fishery.
The NS lake trout population is exceptional and every year our guests land dozens of fish 40″ or better each year. Tales of reels being ‘spooled out’ are not uncommon. The biggest trout we have ever heard of landed was a fish that hung out of both sides of the cradle.
Spring and fall fishing is in the shallows, with water from 2′ to 10′ deep, casting and trolling spoons and plugs. The summertime is when the North Seal advantage kicks in, as they school up in these ‘shallower’ and easily defined holes, easily fishable by trolling or jigging with braided line and 3 oz. jigs or spoons. This is the style of fishing the Movius party and many others relish.
